Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a directive, patient-centered counseling style for eliciting behavior change by helping clients explore and resolve ambivalence. This workshop will review the fundamental spirit of MI, strengthen empathic counseling skills, explore client language clues and practice the application of MI by maintaining a collaborative conversation in strengthening a person's own motivation and commitment to change.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Describe Motivational Interviewing and how it works.
  2. Explain the uses of OARS for effective client engagement.
  3. Identify Thomas Gordon's 12 roadblocks to effective communication.
  4. Identify implementation techniques to provide hope and confidence through the stages of change.
  5. Recognize signals of discord and verbalize the importance of rolling with resistance.
  6. Explain 10 strategies for evoking change talk.
