Developed in response to the increasing amounts of violence in our society at large, this training will help participants better understand how trauma impacts individuals, families and communities, and develop skills to more effectively interact with those who have or are experiencing trauma.

  • Hurt focuses on the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Study, which explored the connection between childhood adversity and health problems later in life. Participants will engage in interactive activities to learn about how early childhood experiences impact brain development.
  • Heal helps participants identify survival behaviors that are symptoms of trauma. Real-life examples will be used to teach participants how to respond in a trauma-informed manner. Many people think a person's resiliency is just a part of their personality or character but  in reality, it can be taught and learned.
  • Hope focuses on self-care. How do we continually engage with others as they work towards growth and change in their lives? If we aren't recharging and refueling ourselves so that we have the resources available to us when engaging with others, we are prone to burn-out, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Evaluate the impact of adverse childhood experiences throughout life.
  2. Engage in the “Brain Game” to differentiate between toxic stress, tolerable stress and positive stress.
  3. Identify “bottom up” approaches in resolving early childhood trauma.
  4. Recognize the impact of trauma on the brain, body and spirit.
  5. Learn and understand the trauma triangle, recognize trauma reenactment and engage in group activities to evaluate roles in responding in ways to break these patterns.
  6. Discuss the need to care for themselves before they can care for others.
