We Received the School of Excellence Award

The National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET) recently honored the therapeutic day treatment school on our Gillis Campus with their School of Excellence Award. Judged on 13 criteria including quality of curriculum, licensure of staff and multiculturalism, NASET determined that we met all eligibility standards required for the award.

“I take great pride in our school being selected,” shares Pam Sanders, the school's director of education. “We have created a safe, supportive and trauma-sensitive school community that enables students and staff to feel safe, build caring relationships with one another and regulate their feelings and behaviors while they learn. It requires attention to both physical and emotional wellbeing in addition to academic achievement.”

NASET is a national membership organization dedicated to ensuring that all youth with special needs receive the best education possible. They serve the professional interest of special education teachers in order to promote the highest professional standards and are committed to standards of excellence and innovation in educational research, practice, and policy. As award recipients, we now look forward to collaborating further with NASET to promote standards of excellence and innovation in special education research, practice, and policy in order to foster what Pam refers to as “exceptional teaching for exceptional children.”

“As trauma-sensitive educators, we realize and recognize the epidemic of trauma in our school, especially in terms of impact on an individual’s stress response systems, student behavior and learning,” Pam explains. “We work collaboratively together to establish a positive environment and school culture centered on helping everyone feel safe and connected with one another.”
